Yep, I found the answer in this very thread as I detailed above.

SO MUCH good info here, just gotta find it and sometimes you get blinded to it as you're scrolling through pages and pages of search results.

Hello, I have the probe screen installed and working well.
But remap M6 and manual tool changes do not work. there is no manual tool change dialogue and M6 Tn makes it
move to the tool change position and then up on the Z axis it is then necessary to pres the program stop button to continue.
I have attached the hal and ini file.
Is there somebody that could guide me through the trouble shooting of this issue, I am not all that familiar with linux.
But have set several machines up with linuxcnc although slowly and with some difficulty.
this one has me stumped.

The attachments seem to be empty (zero bytes)

Does your hal "loadusr hal_manualtoolchange"?

You have the manual tool change section commented-out
#  ---manual tool change signals---

#net tool-change-request     iocontrol.0.tool-change       =>  hal_manualtoolchange.change
#net tool-change-confirmed   iocontrol.0.tool-changed      <=  hal_manualtoolchange.changed
#net tool-number             iocontrol.0.tool-prep-number  =>  hal_manualtoolchange.number
#net tool-prepare-loopback   iocontrol.0.tool-prepare      =>  iocontrol.0.tool-prepared

Uncomment those lines, and add a line before them to load the manual toolchange component.
loadusr −W hal_manualtoolchange

Thanks Andy, They were commented out as per the instructions to install the probe screen. I added the loadusr −W hal_manualtoolchange and uncommented the other 4 lines. I removed the probe screen and will try to load it again in the morning.
The tool change is working again.

I don't know why probe-screen says to comment the lines. It might be for a very good reason. Perhaps probe-screen expects to do it itself?

The tool change seems to be working and probe screen seems to load.
Linuxcnc starts and I can home my machine now but probing is not working.
I will be able to post my ini and hal files in a few minutes.

Yes probe screen is supposed to do the tool change.
If I comment out EMBEDDED _TAB and EMBEDED_TAB_COMMAND in the display section and uncomment tool change in the hal file
tool change works. otherwise the probe screen comes up but no tool change.

Maybe it is because for example Gmoccapy asks you to add similar lines for their own toolchange routines.
