I do believe Debian uses TCL and TK ver 8.5 where Mint and Ubuntu use 8.5 or 8.6. I have not messed with this in a while do not have time at this moment to check it out. You are welcome to try and fix then post here and I will update script later when I get a chance to see your post.

Good luck

Thanks!

It looks like TJ made some changes to the .iso. I wasn't able to download them the other day, I tried again a couple days ago and saw that he had re-uploaded them.

The new iso worked fine with LMDE 2 Betsy.

So far so good, the new (to me) computer will be here Tuesday, I'll see how it runs.

Regards,

Matt

I am having the problem of axis not running and the error message that was discussed back on the first 2 pages of this thread.

I used the install procedure from Big John from his mesaus website in the download section. Apparently some newer versions are out since that doc so I installed them (mint 17.3, linuxcnc 2.7.4).

I believe I followed the instructions correctly but have the exact problem of axis not starting and the error message as in the first couple pages of this thread. (task: 513 cycles, min=0.000018, max=0.008041, avg=0.002026, 0 latency excursions (> 10x expected cycle time of 0.001000s)

I have read the entire thread but cannot figure out what might be the cause / cure for axis not starting. Naturally I do not want to do a complete reinstall with a different method if there is a way to "fix" the current install. I did not see any bottom line cause for the axis not running problem.

Any help much appreciated !

George

the

message is just for information, its not an error message

I would start LinuxCNC from the command line to look for error messages
(and look through the kernel log (dmesg) if running RTAI )

Axis does fail to launch and terminates with that message as the only real hint. This was a old problem (page 2 of this thread) that several had. It was just never clear what specifically was the cause of this problem. Several install techniques and versions were used over time, I don't want to play trial and error with each install taking a couple hours. Hopefully someone can point at what specifically causes axis to fail to launch so I can fix that without numerous complete reinstall attempts.

Thanks Pete

I think the best thing is to look for the real error message
either in the log files or dmesg

Newer version of LinuxCNC _always_ print that timing message when Axis exits
so it doesn't mean anything

I had the same problem with axis not starting but all the other GUI did start and work, it turned out the noveau driver was causing it on computers with nvidia cards and Linux Mint, BlenderCam also did start but was transparent and unusable, caused by the same combo, since both use OpenGL. Just install whatever other drivers and disable Noveau. Works every time ( i have a lot of computers and laptops so i did that same thing 5 or 6 times, incidentally on some desktops with the same combo Mint/Nvidia had no problems working out of the box !!!).

Mine is a levono SFF computer with onboard video. It runs great on debian 7 and linuxcnc 2.7.4 or 2.8 pre so its not a issue of incompatible computer with linuxcnc, its something going on with mint.

I picked up the levono computers for a couple of future retrofits. I got a while yet before starting the retrofit so hopefully mint will mature and some of these compatibility bugs with linuxcnc will get sorted out by then.

I installed linux mint on a hard drive today using this ISO on a usb stick:

Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" - MATE (32-bit)

Than ran through the mint17.3.txt on JT's site. When it got to this line it had an error:

Any idea why a virgin install would error at this point?
