Looks like it's going good for the time being.
Did install a 64 bit or 32 bit version ?
My kernel shows as 4.9.0-6-rt-amd64 (which is good for Intel 64 bit systems and AMD 64 bit systems).
Doesn't matter really 32 or 64 bit I guess
It's amazing how much faster the net install is if have a debian mirror on a home server

Just curious as to why you have a 686-pae kernel (which is for i386 ie 32 bit) on a 64 bit system
According to JT's notes you should have from uname -a:
4.9.0-6-rt-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Debian 4.9.82-1+deb9u3 (2018-03-02) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Even this page only lists 686-pae for i386
packages.debian.org/stretch/linux-image-4.9.0-6-686-pae
While this is the listing for 64 bit
packages.debian.org/stretch/linux-image-4.9.0-6-amd64
Out of interest can you runand

This is my old install from my previous PC that did go broken.
My misunderstanding I thought that RT PREEMPT always is 64bit.
Anyhow that install has been running my lathe with 7i76e until the PC got damaged.
But the fresh install I made is most likely 64bit as I followed the text file you linked to.
But if this works (the old HDD) OK I have all my installs set among them the struggle with Touch so then I will keep it that way, maybe if I get some spare time (on pension = very busy) I will try to get Touch installed to the other HDD.

Ok I'm with you, Old HDD in New PC ?
Sorry I thought you were on the fresh install.
But anyways it looks like you are just about back up & running. And wifi was a pain to get going as well if I remember correctly.
See English is my natural tongue and I still get things mixed up......Although in my defence I speak Australian

No worries mate
I will have to try remembering how to get the bloody touch up and running, then I switch over to the 64 bit.
I have been poking on both installs and now it seems to be working on both.
Have had 1 start of Axis where I got the latency popup on the old install. But nothing after that.
Closing down LinuxCNC and starting again gives errors, but if I wait for a while LCNC starts OK. Maybe some memory/cache issue of some sort. but now I am stressing the system so no wonder if something goes wrong.

Beautiful as we say Down Under.
How long did the net install take......first time I did it it took ages as my Internet is only good for 150 Kilobyte per second download (1.5Mbps).......if we get lucky and the New Gumbernment Funded NBN gets here (was supposed to have last sept) I might get 40Mbps...Previous Government wanted to roll out fibre.....but they got replaced and the New Gumbernment decided a hybrid system (using the old copper & string & tin cans) would be cheaper. I love the technical decisions made here hahahahahahahaha

I'm on fiber now so it is rather painless (100 down and 10 up). It took many years to get fiber out here at the countryside and it is not so cheap either.

Some good news and bad news.
1. booted 64 bit = lathe did run pawn.ngc without any problems.
!! Touch did work but bad calibration !!
2. did some browsing in catalogs back and forth = FREEZE !!!
3. booted 32 bit = lathe is running OK and Touch is working as it is calibrated.
dis same a lot of browsing and no problems, did leave running latency-histogram and will go back and see how it looks and if it is frozen or not.
I'll be back
